Green

What is the word for color green in Hindi?

It is called "haraa" in Hindi. हरा in Devnagri.

Greenery is called हरियाली, coming from the same word.

If you need example, here is the famous song विजयी विश्व तिरंगा प्यारा which sings:

" केसरिया बल भरने वाला
स्वेत रंग सच्चाई
हरा रंग है हरी हमारी
धरती की अंगड़ाई"

Which tells about the colors in Indian national flag. Green color represents greenery of the land...

Kitab vs Pustak

Has Sanskrit/Hindi word Pustak anything to do with Animal Skin? I think Urdu word Kitab has some relation to its meaning as animal skin. Is "pustak" also somehow similar?

There is no reference pointing the meaning of "pustak" towards "animal skin." Pustak means book.

I referred to Monier-Williams and here is what is written there:

पुस्त Pusta, m.n. working in clay, modelling, Kathaas.; a manuscript, book, Var. (cf. below); Hcat.; mfn. covered, filled, W. - karman, n. plastering, painting, W. - maya, mf(i)n. formed of metal or wood, wrought in clay, modelled, Susr. - vaartta, m. one who loves by books or makes books, VarBrS.

पुस्तक Pustaka, m. or n. a protuberant ornament, boss (see below); mf(ikaa)n. a manuscript, book, booklet, Hariv.; Kaav.; Var.&c. - kara, m. an embosser, VarBrS., Sch. Pustakagara,n. 'book-room', a library, MW. Pustakastarana,n. the wrapper of a manuscript,Hcat.

[Sir Monier Monier-Williams, A Sanskrit-English dictionary etymologically and philologically arranged with special reference to cognate Indo-European languages, Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1898, page 0640]

I think the confusion would have happened because of the meaning of the word "Kitab".

The word kitab means to collect and its root is Katb. Words like kitabat and kitab are derived from the same root. Raghib Isfahani, the renowned scholar of Isfahan of the fifth century Hijra and the author of Mufradiitu Alfaz al-Qur’an writes “katb means to stitch two pieces of skins or bring those two pieces together.” [Ref]

More:

Al-Jafr is a mystical Shia holy book [Link]. The material of al-Jafr is parchment for writing made from animals skin [Link
]

In the same connection here comes this verse [
Link]:

Abu al- 'AlA' (a poet) pointed to this jafr (divination) and said:
"Verily, they became astonished at the family of
Mohammed when their knowledge came to them
written on the skin of a full grown he- goat."

It seems there is connection of "kitab" किताब with "animal skin", or to be specific "skin of a full grown he-goat" as is evident from numerous references...

Adjective emphasis

Are there instances of usage of double adjectives for emphasis?

IMO it depends on the style of the writer/speaker. For example, let us see this poem from the great poet Nagarjun:

अमल धवल गिरि के शिखरों पर,
बादल को घिरते देखा है।
छोटे-छोटे मोती जैसे
उसके शीतल तुहिन कणों को,
मानसरोवर के उन स्वर्णिम
कमलों पर गिरते देखा है,
बादल को घिरते देखा है। [
Ref]

In the first line, the poet uses two adjectives for the mountain (giri), i.e. "amal dhawal". "Amal" means "pure" or "without any impurity" and "dhawal" means "white".

So you can say that even in this Hindi poem, the word "amal" is emphasizing the other color adjective "dhawal"...

In the poem above, "amal" and "dhawal" have complementary meanings; we can't say the meanings are very different...

If I think for examples from Hindi in day-to-day use: we would have

नंग धडंग
आडा तिरछा
सुन्दर सलोना

The meanings of the two words are the same and yet both are used together.

How to thank or praise a talented musician in Hindi?

It can be "नतमस्तक होना", as in - मै आपके सम्मुख नतमस्तक होता हूँ. आपका प्रदर्शन देख कर मै प्रभावित हुआ.
Or one can use बहुत अच्छा/सुन्दर प्रदर्शन! , वाह वाह! or बहुत खूब!
I am not sure if I got the one you were looking for. I guess the first would be closest in Hindi.

Marathi: Mangeshkar

How does the famous surname "Mangeshkar" come?

A common custom of Maharashtrians (natives of Maharashtra state in India) is that they take surnames after their ancestral villages' names. Typically a lot of communities add a "kar" at the end of the village's name, to form their parental surname. The famous singer Lata Mangeshkar's surname is no exception. The surname "Mangeshkar" comes from "Mangeshi" town in Goa where her family originally belonged to.

The name "Mangeshi" itself has been derived from Goddess Mangeshi Temple in Goa - goddess Mangeshi who is a form of Durga or Shakti (ref: concept of Power in Hinduism) is considered the deity there and hence the name of the village/town was after this deity. Lord Shiva has also been named as "Mangesh" and his female counterpart is "Mangeshi".

'Lata' is a Sanskrit word meaning creeper in reference to a plant that spreads by means of stems that creep. Many Indian languages use this word, meaning the same.

My pleasure/With pleasure in

How to say "My pleasure" or "with pleasure: in Hindi? Is it "Khushi se"?

You can say "मुझे प्रसन्नता हुई.", meaning "its my pleasure". (mujhe prasannata hui)

If you want to use it as a reply when someone says "thanks" or धन्यवाद to you, then you can use "यह मेरा सौभाग्य है." (yah mera saubhagya hai) as a better term, as it means and indicates that the speaker feels it was his सौभाग्य / good-luck that s/he was able to help the person - it is a humble gesture to express.

Alternate words for "white" or "safed" in Hindi:

There are many words in Hindi for "white" and all are in day to day use. For example, I can think of these (apart from "safed"):
1) shwet श्वेत

2) dhawal धवल

3) gaur गौर

It appears that the word "gora" has come from this Sanskrit word "gaur".

More than this, here is a very good document which tries to trace the history of the word "white". [
Ref] It tells:

The word "white" can be traced back all the way to Sanskrit through the word "cvit" (Oxford English Dictionary 263). "White" then came into Proto Indo-European as the word "kweid" or "kwid" and as the Indo-European languages divided and evolved the Proto-Germanic form of "white" became "hwitaz" (Barnhart 1233) and eventually the word came into Old English as "hwaIt" (Oxford English Dictionary 263). Through the evolution of the English language, the word became "whit" in Middle English.

Source:
http://www.associatedcontent.com/art..._meanings.html

The word "whit" became ultimately the present day "white".

The word "shwet" is used in Hindi, coming directly from Sanskrit. For example:

बहेगा सरिता में जल श्वेत,
समुज्ज्वल दर्पण के अनुरूप,
देखकर जिसमें अपना रूप,
पीत कुसुम की चादर ओढ़ेंगे सरसों के खेत। [
Ref] (here the poet uses the word shwet for water, meaning clear/pure)

and:

देखतीं आकाश आँखें!

श्वेत अक्षर पृष्ठ काला,
तारकों की वर्णमाला,
पढ़ रहीं हैं एक जीवन का जटिल इतिहास आँखें!
देखतीं आकाश आँखें! [
Ref] (here the noted poet Harivansh Rai Bahchchan is expressing a dark sky with twinkling stars as a black paper and white (shwet) letters on it)

Even the word "dhawal" धवल is used many a time (now a days more often in literature). E.g. in his poem "बादल को घिरते देखा है।", the great poet Nagarjun writes:

अमल धवल गिरि के शिखरों पर,
बादल को घिरते देखा है।
छोटे-छोटे मोती जैसे
उसके शीतल तुहिन कणों को,
मानसरोवर के उन स्वर्णिम
कमलों पर गिरते देखा है,
बादल को घिरते देखा है। [
Ref]

In the above lines, the poet uses the word "dhawal" धवल for "white" mountains. He even calls it "amal dhawal" where "amal" means "pure" or "without any impurity" and "dhawal" means "white". So the word "dhawal" indicates both the "color" white as well as the qualities of white depending on the way we want to use it.

It appears that the word "safed" सफ़ेद also came from the Sanskrit word "shwet" श्वेत: Here is the reference for this:
Wilford was quite right, as anyone might know who had the slightest acquaintance with the Persian and Hindustani, in which languages the word "safed", "sufet", "white", is clearly derived from the Sanskrit "Shwet".
